No. 83 – Blogs My Wife Reads #4: Dr. Mercola

Dr. Mercola

(This post is part of a series, for the series introduction and/or to begin at the beginning, please see Blogs My Wife Reads #1.)

Ah…Dr. M. Where to begin? I have been looking forward to doing this one for a couple reasons:

1. He’s not a mom blogger, so that makes him stand out a bit from the crowd.

2. He makes the best protein powder in the world.

If I could just digress for one moment, every single day I start out consuming a significant amount of Dr. Mercola’s protein powder mixed with organic (low-pasteurized, non-homogenized) whole milk from grass fed cows. I’ve eaten so much of it that it is extremely likely that a significant portion of my physical body is solely made up of Mercola-brand protein products.

We used to get this kind, the Miracle Whey Protein:

pure powerThey seem to be fazing out the tubs pictured above, now it’s started coming in a silver bag kind of thing…which is fine I guess. The hard thing to give up when we switched formulations was that they have a peanut butter flavor in the Miracle Whey but not in the Pure Power. Before on the Miracle kind, I could mix chocolate and peanut butter and get a peanut-butter-cup flavored breakfast shake. How awesome was that? It was extremely awesome.

Enough digressing about protein, here’s what the front page looks like:

Screen Shot 2015-07-03 at 5.10.17 PMSeems like he has a team of writers, they go all over the place on topics, pretty much anything you’d like to know about.

He has had an influence on my wife in the areas of vitamin D3 and K2 and all that, which I’ve written about.  That’s definitely all his fault. He even sells tanning beds that are ‘safer’ and claims he can kill body odor with the sun alone, and I’m pretty sure he eats raw eggs every morning.

He’s a beast.

His posts are a lot more “science-y” than the other blogs I’ve been looking at, and have lots of “updates” about what is being discovered. I think this has helped his blog grow, because some of the updates are sort of scary sounding:

Screen Shot 2015-07-03 at 5.30.42 PMThe main page touts the site to be “The Worlds #1 Natural Health Website” and I have no reason to doubt that statement, it’s pretty massive. He’s a real medical doctor who turned blogger and eventually found some medical balance between the mainline western medicine world and the more alternative natural medicine world. He’s an important voice in the global conversation on all of this.

As I’ve heard it explained to me, by my wife, it initially was just an informational blog, no selling of any kind. But it eventually got so massive that he had to start selling some of the stuff he was talking about to pay the server / web hosting traffic costs, which was probably an amazing idea because I’m sure it’s been extremely profitable, which in turn has helped it to become a bigger site, which has helped get these healthy living ideas and products out to a bigger audience, which has led to them producing their own products, which has lead to them making my protein powder.

Which has led to me being happy.

FINAL ASSESSMENT: I love this guy. He really knows what he’s talking about, and because of his western med-cred, he’ll make your wife sound less like a witchdoctor when she explains that K2 is an important aspect of your supplementation routine if you’re going to be dosing large amounts of D3. He also brings a number of unique and helpful products to the marketplace, though this may result in new monthly expenses. Recommended reading for all crunchy wife candidates, however husbands are cautioned to review credit card statements for the appearance of home tanning bed-sized charges.
